A Harry Griffin - the (original) Lakeland Diary
I'm busy reading A Harry Griffin's 'A Lakeland Diary'. The 1990 edtion
Similar to the recent compilation that was released 'A Lifetime of Mountains: The Best of A.Harry Griffin's Country Diary' its taken from his newspaper column over a number of years. If you enjoyed the precise sculpture of his viginettes in the latest offering I'd really recommend you track down the earlier work. For a start there seems to be more of them, but having 15 years less material to choose from makes the selection even more evocative, broken down as they are month by month.
I'm only part way through and already the book is bristling with post-it notes indicating good locations for future walks and wildcamping, many off the more normal beaten paths.
I really must start to track down Griffin's books, to see if they carry the same visual impact, and provide such excellent ideas.Labels: books, Lake District

Well worth looking out for - I have the full set and am now going for the first editions, signed copies etc (list mania!!) They come up regularly on eBay but are much cheaper than Wainwright. That said, I need to sit down and read through them all

Thats going to be a good read. His "Long Days in the Hills" was one of the earliest Lakes book I read, and partly responsible for my interest in the area. What do you recommend?

Too difficult & too early to say having not read all of them yet but I quite like those which are from his Guardian articles.
